When the Bar Is Too High

Mark 10:17-31
Placing In Context
The disciples were intimidated when they overheard the rich young man’s exchange with Jesus. The bar is now set high for faithfulness. The disciples have already given up a lot, yet suddenly, they’re unsure if it’s enough. Like them, we’re doing the math to determine if we can measure up. Frankly, it doesn’t look good for any of us.
Beliefs that Endure
Jesus sees us shaking in our boots, worried that there’s no way we can do enough to earn God's acceptance. Before we can go any further, Jesus stops our rumination with the reminder that the peace we find in God can’t be achieved, nor can it be lost. When we’re feeling anxious, Jesus assures us: You’re going to be okay. Peace isn’t dependent on you alone.
Moving Forward
In what ways do you still find yourself trying to measure up to earn God’s love? What feels possible as you allow Jesus’ assurances to sink into your mind and heart?
